According to the American Association of Endodontists, about 41,000 root canals are performed per day. This common procedure is not root canalsonly important for your teeth, but it's also vital for your overall health. At Dow Dental, in Springfield, OR, our dentists know just how crucial a root canal really is.

What is your tooth composed of?

Every tooth consists of an intricate layer meant to keep you healthy. Here is what every tooth is made up of:

  • Enamel: It's the white outermost layer. It's designed to be a protective layer so it's very hard.
  • Dentin: It is the layer under enamel and is softer. It absorbs pressure placed on the tooth, like when chewing.
  • Pulp: This third layer has blood vessels and nerves which nourish the tooth.
  • Cementum: This fourth layer anchors your tooth to the jawbone.

What is root canal therapy?

A root canal is necessary when the pulp is suffering from inflammation from bacteria. The dentist will drill in the infected tooth, remove diseased tissue, disinfect the area and fill your tooth with a seal. If necessary, your Springfield doctor will give you a temporary crown until a permanent one is made for you. When the permanent crown is ready, you will swap it out for the permanent one and you'll be ready to go!

How did the dental pulp get infected?

  • Poor oral hygiene can cause the accumulation of plaque, which can result in the creation of cavities that will expose the layers under the enamel.

  • Cracks, fractures, and chips caused by injuries can allow bacteria to reach the pulp.

How to prevent root canals?

A good dental regimen is always a good place to start. So make sure you brush twice a day and floss at least once. Eating healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables, can also reduce your chances of getting cavities that may result in you needing a root canal.
