All dentists strive to prevent oral health problems, as do their patients. However, sometimes restorations or even full tooth replacements Dental Crowns And Bridgesbecome necessary due to decay, infection, or injury. At Dow Dental in Springfield, OR, Drs. Douglas and Coleman Dow create dental bridges and porcelain crowns that bring smiles back to the beauty and functionality which they once had. What's your restorative need?

What is a porcelain crown?

A porcelain crown caps a damaged tooth above the gum line. Tooth-shaped and permanently bonded in place, a crown protects a weakened tooth structure, preserving the life of the tooth and improving how it looks.

Dr. Dow can tell you if a crown is right for your tooth by examining it and taking digital X-rays. Before the crowning procedure, some teeth require root canal therapy to remove inflamed pulp from deep within the tooth. In any case, crowning involves the removal of old fillings and decay and shaping the tooth so that it properly accepts the customized restoration.

Most crown treatments take two appointments at Dow Dental—one to evaluate/ prep the tooth and to take oral impressions, and another appointment to bond the new crown in place. Comfortable and lifelike, crowns last anywhere from 5-to-15 years, according to Doc Shop. However, longevity depends on avoiding teeth clenching and keeping good oral hygiene habits.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge from Dow Dental in Springfield replaces one or more missing teeth. Crowns placed over adjoining natural teeth support the pontics (i.e. the customized artificial teeth). The Drs. Dow take great care in crafting the treatment plan so that the bridge:

  • Fits properly
  • Looks natural in size and color
  • Bites with the opposing arch perfectly

Sometimes, bridges may be supported by titanium dental implants being surgically placed directly into the jaw bone. Once in place, they are truly permanent and will last for years with routine brushing, flossing, and hygienic cleanings at Dow Dental. As with dental crowns, you should keep your appliance free of plaque and tartar for good oral health and increased bridgework longevity.

Dental crowns offer multiple benefits for your smile. The porcelain restorations not only repair and strengthen teeth but also improve their Dental Crownsappearance. Dentists Drs. Carmen and Douglas Dow offer dental crowns at their Springfield, OR, office.

What are crowns?

If you take a close look at a crown, you'll notice that it looks just like the part of your tooth that appears above the gum line - with one important difference. Crowns are hollow and designed to cover teeth completely. Before you receive a crown, your Springfield dentist will prepare your tooth to receive the crown. This step is particularly important, as it ensures a comfortable fit and natural appearance.

After your tooth is prepared, your dentist will make an impression of your mouth and send it to the dental laboratory that will create your crown out of porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal. It generally takes about two weeks to receive your new crown. In the meantime, you'll wear a temporary crown crafted by your dentist. Despite their short-lived status, temporary crowns are surprisingly durable. You'll be able to chew with them, although you'll need to avoid hard, tough or sticky foods, as these foods can break or dislodge your temporary crown.

At your second crown appointment, your dentist will place the permanent crown over your tooth to ensure that it fits correctly. After it's cemented to your tooth, you may need a few minor adjustments that will take 10 minutes or less.

Why do I need a crown?

Adding a crown to a fragile tooth can keep it from fracturing or breaking apart in the future. Your tooth may be fragile if it's cracked or brittle, or if you've recently undergone a root canal or had a large filling placed in your tooth. Crowns also restore teeth that have broken or fractured and are used as an alternative to a filling if decay is widespread in a tooth.

Although restoration and protection are important functions of crowns, they can also be used to change the shape or height of a tooth or cover discolorations or imperfections.

Do you have an uneven smile or a chipped tooth which makes you feel self-conscious? If so, you could benefit from dental bonding. Thisdental bonding procedure can repair small imperfections in your smile to give you big results. Learn more about the benefits of dental bonding with Dr. Coleman Dow and Dr. Douglas Dow at Dow Dental in Springfield, OR.

What is dental bonding?
Dental bonding is a procedure which uses composite resin materials to reshape the tooth. Composite resin is tooth-colored and has similar light-reflecting qualities as natural teeth, ensuring it blends into your smile flawlessly. Additionally, the composite resin comes in many different shades, allowing your dentist to find the best fit for your tooth color.

The Benefits of Dental Bonding
One of the most obvious benefits to dental bonding its improvement to your smile. The procedure itself takes only minutes and is one of the most affordable ways to rejuvenate your smile. Bonding can also close small gaps in the teeth, correct uneven tooth length or width, and change the appearance of a stained or discolored tooth. Additionally, dental bonding can repair chips in the teeth.

Dental Bonding in Springfield, OR
Bonding procedures begin with cleaning the tooth. Etching material roughens the surface of the tooth, allowing for a better bond between the tooth and the composite resin material. After the etching process, your dentist carefully molds the pliable resin directly onto the tooth and creates the desired shape. With the resin in place, a special light directed at the tooth activates the resin to harden it into place permanently. Your dentist then touches up the tooth and polishes it to a natural finish. Most bonding procedures take less than half an hour and do not require any local anesthetic or recovery time.

When you look in the mirror, you should feel confident about the smile you see. However, sometimes the smallest imperfections make cosmetic contouringyou feel your smile is not up to par. If this is the case, cosmetic dental contouring can reshape and rejuvenate your smile.

What is cosmetic contouring?
Cosmetic contouring reshapes the teeth to improve their appearance instantly. Your dentist slowly removes pieces of enamel to change the length, width, shape, or even out the tooth’s surface. Sometimes, changes as small as only a tenth of a millimeter can smooth out the teeth and transform your smile. Your dentist can help you choose the right approach for your desired results. Cosmetic contouring is often used in conjunction with other cosmetic dental procedures like veneers, bonding and orthodontics.

What can cosmetic contouring repair?
Contouring repairs small imperfections of the teeth, including:

  • small chips
  • crooked teeth
  • bulges or pits in a tooth's enamel
  • uneven tooth length
  • misshaped teeth
  • overlapping or crowded teeth

While most imperfections can be treated using cosmetic contouring, others may need more aggressive dental or orthodontic treatment.

The Procedure
Your dentist uses x-rays to see into the teeth to determine if there has been any bone loss or tooth decay. This also allows your dentist to be sure there is enough bone to support the changes to the teeth. To shape the teeth, your dentist uses a dental drill with various bits. When the procedure is over, the teeth are polished and cleaned. Results are seen immediately. Anesthetic is not usually needed though your dentist may recommend numbing depending on your sensitivity. After the procedure, discomfort is minimal and usually does not require even over-the-counter pain treatments.

Do people often tell you that you have a beautiful smile? Or do you rarely smile because of the condition of your teeth? According to a study conducted by Wakefield Research and commissioned by the American Association of Orthodontics (AAO), over one-third of all Americans are unhappy with their smile. Many believe that they would have a better social life if they had better teeth, and a small percentage are convinced they would even have a better job if their smile was nicer.

Fortunately for this unhappy group of Americans, there is hope for a better life with cosmetic dentistry. Drs. Coleman A. Dow and VeneersDouglas N. Dow of Dow Dental in Springfield, OR would be delighted to help you solve your dental conundrum!

What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Unlike traditional dentistry, which deals with concerns such as oral hygiene, cavities, and gum disease, cosmetic dentistry focuses on the aesthetic improvement of a person's teeth and mouth. Cosmetic dentistry is an optional service that can provide great benefits. Some of these are restorative, such as the replacement of bad teeth with implants made of composite materials or porcelain. Other treatments, such as Invisalign, can improve the smile by correcting the positioning of the teeth.

Is Cosmetic Dentistry a Worthwhile Investment?

Cosmetic dentistry not only improves the smile, but can be very cost-effective. Advancements in dentistry allow for the use of materials that are strong and durable, lasting longer than treatments in the past. A smile makeover is comfortable and convenient and can be performed right in the dental office. If you are a part of the percentage that believe your smile is the problem with your social life, then you owe it to yourself to give cosmetic dentistry a try.

Cosmetic dentistry offers a variety of solutions for people unhappy with their smile. Dow Dental in Springfield, OR can make it happen for you as they have for many others. Call to schedule a consultation today!
